- Since 1997 the total number of children in Wales looked after by foster carers and in residential care increased by 50%.
- There is a shortage of nearly 750 Foster Carers in Wales alone. In March 2009, there were 4705 looked after children and young people in Wales and 77% of these lived with Foster Carers.

Introduction to IFCS
Independent Foster Care Services (IFCS) operates a 24 hour, 7 day a week duty system to support foster carers, children and young people in foster care with IFCS and to consider referrals from Local Authority Social Services Departments.
